Meet Dr. Lisa McGonigal:
Personalized Concierge Family Medicine at Personal Health MD

Hello Boston! I’m delighted to be joining Drs. Donahue and Walkey at Personal Health MD, and for the opportunity to serve and practice in the heart of the city.

I’m excited to share a bit about myself and what you can expect when you partner with me for your care.

Comprehensive Family Medicine for Adults and Children

I’m a Family Medicine physician providing comprehensive care for adults and children ages five and up. At the core of my work is a simple belief: the best medicine happens when physicians have the time to truly listen, get to know their patients, and build meaningful partnerships over the long term.

Early in my career I practiced in rural West Virginia, where medicine moved at a slower pace. I cared for multiple generations within the same families and experienced firsthand how powerful it can be when a physician understands a patient’s concerns within the full context of their life.

As clinical care has become increasingly rushed and impersonal, I’ve missed that kind of small-town medicine. When I met Dr. Donahue, his vision for Personal Health MD – modern medicine, old-fashioned caring – in the heart of Boston – immediately resonated. It captured exactly what I value as a physician, and I knew I’d found my home.

A Practice Built for the Whole Family

It’s also important to me that PHMD offers true Family Medicine – we offer care for the whole family.

In a concierge medicine landscape where adult-only care is the norm, PHMD’s commitment to caring for both adults and children is rare and meaningful.

And while I love working with adults, caring for children brings a special joy. Partnering with parents to help lay the foundation for a lifetime of health is incredibly rewarding, and I’m proud to be part of a practice where families can build long-term, trusting relationships with a physician who will be in their corner for years to come.

My Approach: Proactive, Personalized, Collaborative

My approach to care is proactive, personalized, and highly collaborative. I work hard to create a warm, supportive environment where patients feel heard, respected, and genuinely cared for.

When you meet me as a new patient, I take the time to understand your full story – your symptoms, goals, stressors, values, and what your daily life looks like.

Together, we’ll review your medical history, clarify priorities, and build a thoughtful, realistic plan. My goal is for you to leave feeling clear, calm, and hopeful, with a plan that feels doable and aligned with your life.

Prevention and Lifestyle Medicine

I’m a firm believer in prevention and proactive care.

In addition to Family Medicine, I’m also board-certified in both Preventive and Lifestyle Medicine, allowing me to bring multiple medical perspectives into your care.

  • Family Medicine prepares me to care for a wide range of health concerns across all ages and life stages.
  • Preventive Medicine sharpens my focus on identifying risks early and protecting long-term health.
  • Lifestyle Medicine allows me to incorporate evidence-based strategies – nutrition, movement, sleep, and stress management – into care plans in practical, sustainable ways.

Special Interests: Cardiometabolic Health, Menopause Care, Healthspan

I enjoy all aspects of primary care, but I’m particularly passionate about working with patients facing cardiometabolic health concerns, such as insulin resistance and pre-diabetes, high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol, fatty liver, and weight gain.

I’m currently pursuing professional certifications in Cardiometabolic Medicine to stay on top of the latest diagnostics and treatments in this quickly evolving area, while my training in Lifestyle Medicine allows me to also work closely with patients on the small, everyday habits that are the foundation of long-term cardiometabolic health.

Likewise, I’m deeply committed to supporting women through menopause, a stage of life where many continue to feel dismissed or overlooked. Thoughtful, evidence-based care can make an enormous difference, and I consider it a privilege to guide patients during this transition.

My ears also perk up when a patient says they want to focus not only on longevity, but also “healthspan.”

Living longer shouldn’t be our only goal; a data-driven, proactive approach emphasizing exercise, nutrition, sleep, and emotional health can help you thrive in those later years – to feel strong, energetic, sharp, and capable as you age.

Advocating for You Across the Healthcare System

Finally, I know today’s healthcare system can feel fragmented and overwhelming; I don’t believe patients should have to navigate it alone.

At PHMD, we maintain strong relationships with trusted specialists at Mass General, the Brigham, and Beth Israel Lahey. I support and advocate for patients throughout the referral process and help them interpret specialist recommendations and connect the dots across their care.

A Personal Note

I’ll close with a personal confession: I still genuinely love pizza and French fries – the greasier, the better.

Over the years, I’ve learned that consistency matters far more than perfection. Prioritizing sleep, daily movement, and nourishing foods can have a powerful impact over time, but real life always includes some detours.

I try to keep things simple and approach the process with self-compassion. My goal is to build a sustainable plan that supports my health and works in the context of my everyday life.

I work with my patients to do the same.
Warmly, Dr. Lisa McGonigal
