Susan Carroll, RD, LDN

Susan is an integrative nutritionist specializing in IBS, food sensitivities, weight loss and chronic health problems that may result from nutritional imbalances. Her approach is drawn from the perspective of functional medicine, in which she has had over 20 years experience, which considers the unique needs of each individual with the goal of addressing the root cases of chronic illness. She has been working as an integrative nutritionist, creating personalized nutrition and lifestyle plans and running weight loss and nutritional detoxification programs since 1990.

Susan also draws from her studies of conventional nutrition therapy and dietetics, counseling, various approaches to nutrition and cutting-edge research. She has extensive experience utilizing tools such as laboratory tests to help uncover individual sensitivities, excesses or nutrient needs that might be contributing to symptoms or imbalances. She believes that the body has a tremendous potential for self healing which can be facilitated by the right diet and, when appropriate, targeted nutritional supplements.

Her approach encompasses a philosophy that promotes a whole foods diet, is patient centered and healing oriented. She recognizes the importance of the therapeutic relationship and respects where a person is at in their readiness to change. She recognizes that for some, a gradual, goal-oriented approach works best and that others receive motivation from the renewed health that a nutritional “tune-up” can bring. “It is very rewarding to participate in the healing process and to help individuals find a way of eating that works for them and move toward their goals for health, vitality and balance in their life.”

Susan has a B.S. in Foods and Nutrition and is a licensed Dietitian / Nutritionist. She pursued her degree in Foods and Nutrition with the goal of working in a holistic / integrative health center. Her post-graduate education in integrative nutrition and functional medicine began in 1989 when as the first registered dietitian to study with Jeffrey Bland, PhD, the founder of the institute for functional medicine, she completed a five-day course in clinical nutritional from a functional medicine perspective. The same year, she completed a five-day training program sponsored by the American Holistic Medical Association: A Holistic Approach to the Immune System followed by a six-month directed study with Dan Kinderlehrer, MD at the New England Center for Holistic Medicine. She has continued her training in integrative and functional nutrition therapy and has been working as an integrative nutritionist for the past 20 years. She is a member of the American Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and Dietitians in Integrative and Functional Medicine.
